History of Holland Container Innovations
Holland Container Innovations (HCI) was founded in 2008 to find a solution to reduce costs of empty container repositioning. This issue costs the industry over twenty-five billion US dollars per year. HCI has since developed and marketed the idea for the 4FOLD foldable shipping container. The company is a spinoff from the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.
In 2009, funded by private investors with a long term vision, HCI built a first prototype of the foldable container together with co-funder and co-creator CMA-CGM. This prototype served as a proof of concept. Two years later, in 2011, HCI built a new prototype that received the important Container Safety Convention (CSC) certification.
In close cooperation with a Chinese manufacturer, HCI built another redesigned and improved container in 2013. In March of that year, 4FOLD was the first 40ft foldable container in the world to receive ISO certification. This ISO certificate finally guarantees that the foldable container meets all industry requirements and paves the way for use in the existing logistic system.
In the years following the certification, well-known shipping lines APL and Hanjin helped to refine 4FOLD further by starting pilot projects. However, heavy tides in the shipping industry set back mass production and market introduction.
In 2016 the European Union (EU) included HCI in the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program (agreement 711257). The EU supports the environmental benefits of 4FOLD, since foldable containers reduce empty transport and thereby emissions.
As a result of this endorsement from the European Union and the corresponding financial injection, HCI now has a production line that allows production of 4FOLD on a large scale. With this line HCI builds 4FOLD for lower costs and with a better lead time.
Today 4FOLD is the only CSC and ISO certified foldable container on the market.
The 4FOLD foldable container provides the shipping industry with the much-needed tool to reduce costs associated with empty container movements.
HCI focuses on delivering new products to the container shipping industry. Most of all we use our core strengths of Research & Development (R&D) and excellent engineering. When the 4FOLD Foldable Container is a proven success, more products for the container market will follow.
